Normally I'm hit or miss on the anti-folk stuff preferring straight-up folk or straight up non-folk but the last two songs have me hitting repeat more than is probably good for me.
Smells like Teen Spirit - Dokaka
Oops I Did it Again - Richard Thompson
I already linked to the Hey Ya video by Mat Weddle back in August. Here are a few more songs with the "cover" tag that I like. Sorry for the blind images audio links, I'm not entirely sure how to add more metadata to make them show which one goes to which song.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.) Inspired by Stephanie.
I lost my whole music collection in a tragic asshated deletion moment. I've been rebuilding it from the collection of friends and strangers, so it skews towards banjo currently, apparently.
- Sea Lion Woman - Crooked Jades - nice acapella sounding. I wish this wasn't all DRMed
- I Can See Clearly Now - The Deighton Family - awesome cover, from a mix cd I think I imported but never listened to
- Off to Sea Once More - pretty sure it's Grisman/Garcia - from the sea shanty mix "These are the wails of a hundred years" made for me by good old whatshisname back when he and my sister had a good thing going.
- Golden Ring - Dry Branch Fire Squad - excellent cover [why are these all covers? how non-random is that? what does that say about my horoscope? damn this song is long]
- Lost John - Woody Guthrie
- Letter From an Occupant - New Pornographers
- Barefoot Marmlish Blues - B. Sam Firk - I see a theme here
- Charles Giteau - Kelly Harrell And The Virginia String Band
- Drink to Me Babe, Then - AC Newman - one of the things I'd lost that was in the "hipster stuff that the ex listened to all the time" that I went ahead and replaced anyhow
- Take me Into Your Embrace - Marika Kanaropoulou - Ah the lovely Women of Rembetica!
I really wish last.fm's redesign didn't suck so hard, otherwise I'd have more excitement about teling you to go check out what else I listen to. What a weird group of stuff? What have I learned?
Before there was Windows XP....
I can not tell a lie, I grew up in the seventies reading Rolling Stone magazines back when there was something a little bit edgy about it [to my adolescent mind anyhow]. I learned what masturbation was by reading an article about Iggy Pop doing it onstage. The sex and rock and roll link is strong in my brain and this album cover was the first and only one that came readily to mind.
[nb: I love this song]
All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
Listen, please listen, that's the way it should be
Deep in the valley, people got to be free
You should see, what a lovely, lovely world this'd be
Everyone learned to live together, ah-hah-unh
seems to me such an easy, easy thing this should be
Why can't you and me learn to love one another
All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
I can't understand it, so simple to me
People everywhere just got to be free
Ah, ah, yeah . . . ah, ah, yeah
If there's a man who is down and needs a helping hand
All it takes is you to understand and to see him through, ah-hah-unh
Seems to me, we got to solve it individually ah-hah-unh
And I'll do unto you what you do to me
There'll be shoutin' from the mountains on out to sea
(out to the sea)
No two ways about it, people have to be free
(they got to be free)
Ask me my opinion, my opinion will be
(ah-ha)
It's a natural situation for a man to be free
git right on board now
Oh, what a feelin's just come over me
Enough to move a mountain, make a blind man see
Everybody sing it now, come on, let's go see
Peace in the valley, now we ought to be free
SPOKEN
See that train over there?
Thats the train of freedom
It's about to 'rrive any minute, now
You know it's been'a long, long overdue
Look out 'cause its a'comin' right on through
21st birthday was Hanging Tough by NKoTB. The first 20 words of this song are all "Oh" In fact, that word appears 75 times in the song. It is not a long song.
